The sporting term "Hat Trick" (meaning 3 goals scored in a match) originates from the cricket, c.1877.
A bowler who took 3 wickets in succession was awarded a new cap by his club to commemorate the feat.

A British law was implemented in 1732 which restricted the manufacturing of hats in the colonies of America. This was done to protect the fiber industry in England.

The phrase "If that's not true, I'll eat my hat" is said to originate from the reign of Charles II in England. Apparently they named a goat after him that had his same love of life which included, in the goat's case, eating hats.

The Fedora hat is apparently named after a woman in a french play (Called, "Fédora") written by Victorien Sardou in 1882.

The inventor of the Top Hat, John Hethrington, was fined £50 in 1797 for "appearing on the public highway wearing upon his head a tall structure having a shining lustre and calculated to frighten timid people".
